On June 6, 2017, the Saginaw City Council called a Special Election to be held on Saturday, July 29, 2017. The positions on the ballot will be the unexpired terms of office for Mayor (term expires May 2018), Council Place 3 (term expires May 2019), and Council Place 5 (term expires May 2019). Mayor Gary Brinkley resigned on May 16th after accepting a job offer out of state. Councilmember Place 5 Chris Barngrover resigned on May 25th because he is moving out of the City and has placed his house on the market. Councilmember Place 3 Todd Flippo resigned May 18th in order to run for the position of Mayor.
Applications to file for a place on the ballot must be turned in no later than 5:30 p.m. on Monday, June 19, 2017. Application packets may be picked up at City Hall (Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., and Friday, 7:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.)
Qualifications for running for office are: must be 21 years of age on the date of the election; must be a citizen of the United States and a registered voter of the State of Texas; must reside and have resided for at least one year preceding the election at which he/she is a candidate, within the city limits of Saginaw; and must not be in arrears in the payment of any taxes due the City. Also must not have been convicted of a felony.
The last day to register to vote in the July 29th election is June 29th. Registration forms are available at City Hall.
All early voting will be held at the Senior Citizens Center, 405 S. Belmont Street. The dates and times are as follows:
All voting on Election Day, July 29th, will be held from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Fire Station No. 1-Training Room, 404 S. Saginaw Blvd.
The results of the election will be canvassed at a Special City Council Meeting on August 8, 2017.
