Austin Pittman is being promoted to the rank of Apparatus Operator from his previous position of firefighter. The department has six Apparatus Operators, one assigned to each of our three shifts at both fire stations. The Apparatus Operators are the primary drivers and operators of our fire apparatus and act-up as the company officer in the absence of their respective shift Captain or Lieutenant. The Apparatus Operators are also responsible for conducting the annual shift duty life and fire safety inspections of our local businesses.
AO Pittman has been with our department since March of 2013. Austin is a Paramedic and holds an Intermediate Firefighter certification along with several other certifications from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. Beginning in 2016 Austin also serves as the department’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Coordinator responsible for EMS training activities, EMS supplies and EMS quality assurance reviews. AO Pittman is currently assigned to “B” shift at fire station one but his promotion will require some shift and station reassignments. His promotion will become effective on January 28th.
The promotion was necessary due to the scheduled retirement late last year of a Fire Captain after 34 honorable years of service which successively led to promotions in all shift duty ranks. “I am completely confident in Austin’s ability to be successful in his new role as Apparatus Operator. From Austin’s first day with our department he has exhibited a very high level of dedication and professionalism that is not only commendable, it bolsters our ability to deliver the highest quality emergency services to our citizens” states Fire Chief Spears.
