Police Captain Karl Johnson has been with the Saginaw Police Department since 1991 and holds a Master Peace Officer certification. He currently serves as the Patrol Division Commander. His previous duties include; Police Officer, Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Training Coordinator, Professional Standards Lieutenant and Support Services Division Commander. He is a graduate of the Leadership Command College through the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas at Sam Houston State University. As a TCOLE Instructor, he has a strong background in all aspects of training to include; Use of Force, Less Lethal Options, Tactical Operations and Firearms. He currently serves as an Adjunct Instructor for the Tarrant County College Criminal Justice Training Center.
Captain Johnson has been instrumental in the implementation of numerous department enhancements and upgrades, such as; obtaining an Intoxilyzer system and implementing the LEADRS Program for DWI enforcement, deployment of Less Lethal Impact Systems, department wide Patrol Rifle training, upgrade to ballistic armor for officers, Active Shooter Response training and development of a structured SWAT program.
Prior to his Saginaw service, he served fifteen years on active duty with the US Air Force Security Forces. While a City of Saginaw employee, he continued his military service with the US Air Force Reserve to include a two year mobilization and deployments in response to the 9/11 attacks. He culminated his over 30 year military career retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant.
